27 January 2010
The Police are concerned by the persisting problem of livestock that stray onto the country’s main roads. These animals pose danger to motorists especially during the night. During the past week the police removed 1290 cattle from the main roads as opposed to 1175 cattle removed during the previous week.
The police would therefore like to warn farmers whose cattle-posts and farms are closer to the main roads or highways, that it is an offence punishable by law to permit such cattle or other animals to be on the main roads unless they are attended by persons in such a manner as to have proper control over them; or leave such cattle or other animals in a place from which they are likely to stray onto a main road.
The offence calls for a fine of not less than P1000.00 or more than P3000.00, or to imprisonment for a term not less than six months or more than 12 months, or to both. It is therefore advisable to keep livestock away from the main roads.
