The Botswana Police would like to warn the public that threatening someone with death is a serious offence punishable by law. The Penal Code provides that any person who threatens another with death is liable for imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years.

Statistics from the police indicate that the number of cases of Threat to Kill reported since the beginning of the year have increased. A total of 548 cases were reported From January to date compared to 476 the same period last year.

During the week under review the police received a total of nine cases of Threat to Kill reported throughout the country. Police investigations revealed that the victims were threatened through Short Message Service (SMS) using cellular phones while others were done verbally. The police have also observed that in most cases the victims and suspects were lovers whose relationships would have gone sour. 

The public is urged to report threats to kill immediately to the police so that action could be taken against the perpetrators. The police would like to encourage the  public to resort to peaceful dialogue to resolve their differences rather than to threaten others with death.
