Botswana Police Service
Public is warned of swindlers
06/07/10

The public is warned to be on the lookout for criminals who fraudulently obtain money from unsuspecting people. During the week under review the police recorded at least three cases involving cash amounting to over 160 000 Pula in Gaborone, Mogoditshane and Mahalapye.

In one of the incidents a 62-year-old man was swindled of over 75 000 Pula by an unknown man who claimed to be a prophet with the power to increase money. The unknown man disappeared after taking the above amount on two occasions.

In yet another incident, Mogoditshane Police are investigating a case in which two unknown men defrauded a 44 year old woman of  Tshwaaneng the sum of 45 000 Pula. The suspects are reported to have requested to pray for the women and her money. After the victim succumbed to the trick the duo took the money and disappeared.

A 44 year old woman of Tlokweng was arrested last week Wednesday after she falsely obtained a 40 000 Pula loan from a commercial bank in Gaborone under the pretext that she was an employee of a certain company. The woman is said to have presented a false documents to an employee of the bank and given the loan in the above amount.

The police would therefore like to advise the public to be wary of people who claim to perform miracles. The public is further reminded that no supernatural power can increase their money and to ignore anyone who approaches them for such because they are fraudsters.
