Theft of Copper Metals Worrisome
29/11/10
The Police are concerned about the increasing incidents in which copper metals involving large sums of money were stolen at construction sites last week. The stolen items included copper cables, wires, and other metals made of copper. In one of the incidents, Sir Seretse Khama Airport police are investigating an incident in which copper wire and cables worth over P214 000-00 were stolen at a construction site in Block Seven. The incident occurred after unknown people cut the fence and entered a compound belonging to a construction company last Friday. In yet another incident Central police are investigating an incident in which copper cables worth over P147 000-00 were stolen from a construction site at the University of Botswana. The cables were stolen from a building that is under construction. Similar indents were reported at among others, Commerce Park, Phakalane and Mogoditshane. The police would like to urge construction companies to tighten security at construction sites and workshops to avoid falling victims. Construction companies are also advised to engage the services of security companies to deter such criminals. Once again, the police would like to appeal to scrap metal dealers to verify the source of metals especially copper before they could buy them.
