The Botswana Police Service would like to appeal to the public to be cautious when handling or using fire in their homes. This follows disturbing incidents of fire breakout in homes, which resulted in destruction to property and injuries to people.
During the week under review the police recorded at least ten separate fire incidents in which houses caught fire and property worth thousands of money destroyed. Two of the incidents were associated with arson.
In one case, Mogoditshane police are investigating an incident in which a house in Metsimotlhabe caught fire last week Thursday. A six-year-old girl, who was inside the house, escaped with fire burns and was admitted in hospital. The child was rescued by the mother who was alerted about the outbreak of the fire.
In another incident that occurred in Francistown, a house belonging to a 38-year-old man caught fire while the owner was away. The fire destroyed property worth over P17000-00. The cause of the fire is suspected to be a candle that was left burning in one of the rooms.
The police would therefore like to appeal to the public to avoid leaving open fires unattended. The police further appeal to the public to always ensure that open fires like candles and paraffin lamps are placed away from items that can easily ignite fire.
