Botswana Police is concerned about the increasing number of people who lose their lives due to road accidents.

A total of 20 people lost their lives, 11 of them from three separate accidents. In addition, 133 suffered injuries, 75 of them seriously, in nine road accidents reported last week. In the previous week two people died, 40 received serious injuries whilst 98 have escaped with minor injuries from different road traffic accidents.

In one notable incident in Selibe Phikwe, a 28-year-old woman and a five month old twin baby died after a motor vehicle crashed into the house they were sleeping in last Friday. The driver of the vehicle has been arrested while investigations are continuing.

Of concern is that in almost all nine accidents reported during the week under review, preliminary investigations indicate that the accidents were a result of drivers fault as most of them lost control of the vehicles they were driving, resulting in head-on collisions.

So far 232 people have died in road accident compared to 187 who died last year the same period. The number of fatal accidents has also increased as 176 accidents were recorded compared to 150 the preceding year.

The Police would like to appeal to motorists to be responsible and cautious when driving to avoid unnecessary accidents.
