The Auditor General is the external auditor of the Government of Botswana and his office is established by a Constitutional mandate to audit and report on the public accounts of Botswana and of all officers, courts and authorities of the Government of Botswana.
The Auditor General’s independence in undertaking his duties is provided for and protected by the Constitution of the Republic of Botswana. The sustained visibility of this independence is an imperative national indicator, as the Auditor General is an important component in the structural checks and balances that promote good governance in Botswana’s public sector. This indeed further promotes Botswana’s admiral international repute as a leader on the African continent on key indicators of good governance.
As the Supreme Audit Institution (SAI) in the land, the Auditor General adheres to the Finance & Audit Act in the undertaking his duties and is an authority on issues of accountability and financial management in the public service.
