Licensing of Hides and Skins Business
Service description
All hides and skins buyers and exporters are required by law (hides and skins act Cap 49:01) to possess a license entitling them to purchase and or export hides and skins unless it is for domestic use.
Types of licenses
Two kinds of licenses are available
1. Buyer’s license – Entitles one to buy hides and skins within a specified district and one is free to have as many as he can for the various districts.
2. Exporter’s license – Entitles one to buy hides and skins across the country and exports them to the rest of the world.
How to obtain a license
The customer presents himself/herself to the nearest DAP office and makes a request, stating the location for the project which should be at an industrial site or outside the village where there are no areas designated for industries. For the latter, after assessment, the officer concerned fills a form and hands it to the customer to present it to the public health office for further assessment and when they are satisfied that the project will not pose any health hazards to the public, they will recommend that the project can be located at the said site. Then a license may be granted under the following conditions:
1. Availability of water
2. Availability of a drainage system
3. A shed/shelter where the hides/skins will be preserved and kept
4. A quarantine area *( only for an exporters license)
Fees
Buyers license P 100.00 per year
Exporters license P 200.00 per year
NB: Licenses expire on the 31st December each year and its renewable on condition that one complies with the act.
