The Department of Veterinary Services wishes to inform the general public and the farming community that the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) reinstated Zone 7, Selibe-Phikwe district as an FMD free zone without vaccination. This recognition comes after a successful eradication of the 2006 foot and mouth disease outbreak in the zone.
The zone has only regained the FMD free status but not the export status to the European Union (EU). As the zone is not an EU eligible export zone, movement of cloven hoofed animals and cloven hoofed derived fresh products is not allowed out of the zone until the zone has regained the EU export status. Therefore the current movement controls remain in place until negotiations with trading partners have been concluded.
The Department has opened negotiations with trading partners to facilitate trade of livestock and livestock products.
