Botswana's dairy industry produces less than 50% of the quantity of fresh milk consumed in the country. Almost the entire quantity of processed milk is imported (primarily from South Africa). The MOA is proactively encouraging potential dairy farmers under the flagship NAMPAADD scheme, which aims to promote milk production through increasing the dairy herd size and adopting modern farm management techniques and marketing practices.

Poultry Farming

The estimated turkey meat consumption in Botswana is about 536.5 tons. Consumption has increased 398% since 2001. All turkey meat consumed in Botswana is imported from overseas through RSA and the significant increases in consumption is a strong signal to prospective investors that the turkey industry is ready for exploitation.

Ostrich Farming

In 1994, the Department of Wildlife and National Parks’s aerial surveys estimated Botswana’s wild ostrich population to be about 60 000 with the largest population being in north-western Kgalagadi and south-west Ngamiland. Commercial ostrich farming started in Botswana in the late 1980s. Currently, breeding birds reared commercially in Botswana are estimated to be slightly over 1000.

About 80% of our cattle are produced in extensive communal/traditional grazing systems, and the reminder in commercial freehold and leasehold farms.
