The third Sunday of November each year has been declared by the United Nations as Remembrance Day for Road Traffic Victims. The day is created as a means to give recognition to victims of traffic crashes and the plight of their loved ones who must cope with the emotional and practical consequences of these tragedies.

In an attempt to raise public awareness on the unrelenting road crashes; the Ministry of Transport and Communications will like in the past years, be commemorating the above event on the 20th November 2011 at Makaleng village in the North- East District.

At the preparatory helm of this day are the Masunga District Road Safety Committee and other key stakeholders involved in road safety work i.e. Department of Road Transport and Safety, Botswana Police, Ministry of Health, Shell Oil Botswana and Motor Vehicle Accident Fund.

The Minister of Transport and Communications – Hon Nonofo E. Molefhi will deliver the key note message. Amongst other attendees are residents of Makaleng, Masunga, Tshesebe, Tutume, and dignitaries from Gaborone and Francistown.

The lineup of activities is as follows:

  • 14th – 18th November – children Traffic Education
  • 18th – 19th November – free vehicles roadworthiness tests
  • 18th – 19th November – Inspectorate campaign
  • 15th – 19th November 2011 - theory and practical tests for driving
  • 19th November - Road safety debate
  • 14th and 15th November 2011 - Recordings of Molemo wa Kgang and Mokaragana Btv Programmes
  • 17th – 19th Nov. 2011- Road Show in Makaleng and the surrounding villages

The Remembrance Day will further reinforce the efforts of the internationally proclaimed Decade of Action for Road Safety (2011- 2020) launched on the 11th May 2011. Thus the theme for this year event is Safe Road Users BY 2020, which is one of the key pillars of the Decade of Action for Road Safety.

The local communities around the area of Makaleng Village are invited to this  event.

We in conclusion urge all road users to play their part in preserving lives on our roads.
