1. Service Description

Utility Model certificate

This is a certificate granted for an invention that does not qualify for protection as a patent, but an invention that is new and industrially applicable, e.g. hand tools, mechanical implements etc. Protection is for seven (7) years.

2. How do I obtain the service?

Visit one of the Offices of Registrar of Companies and Intellectual Property in Gaborone or Francistown.

3. How do I apply for the service?

The applicant completes FORM 1 obtainable from the Office of Registrar of Companies and Intellectual Property and writes a letter to the Registrar requesting to register a Utility model certificate to the offices of ROCIP.

4. How much does the service cost?

An application fee of P50.00 (individuals and small companies) and P100.00 (large companies) is required. After formal examination the applicant will be required to pay a registration fee of P60.00 (individuals and small companies) and P120.00 (large companies). The design will be registered within 5 working days and published in the Patents and Trademarks Journal.
