UNCTAD XIII Conference

Minister of Trade and Industry Hon. Dorcas Makgato-Malesu attends UNCTAD XIII Conference in Doha, Qatar

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Honourable, Dorcas Makgato-Malesu, will attend the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) XIII Conference in Doha, Qatar from the 19th-26th April 2012.

Botswana has long standing relations with UNCTAD. Some of the assistance received so far from UNCTAD includes technical assistance for drafting the Competition Law, the development of the Investment Strategy for Botswana and the National Export Strategy, funding of the National Workshops in preparations for negotiations under the Economic Partnership Agreement, Trade in Services, capacity development in trade facilitation measures as well as the negotiations and commercial diplomacy skills.

It is therefore important for the Minister to take part in the Conference with a view to influencing the development agenda of the Organization to enable Botswana to continue benefiting from technical and financial assistance on key priority projects.

While at the Conference, the Minister will participate in the following activities:

  • Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWF) Round Table: the theme for this Round Table is, “Exploring the Potential of Sovereign Wealth Funds for Investment in Sustainable Development”. This will be a high level dialogue between SWF Executives and the Ministers. One of the main objectives of the Funds is to assist developing countries in attracting FDI flows on new investment opportunities and to strengthen these economies’ productive capacities in various sectors. This Round Table will be held on Sunday 22nd April 2012.
  • The Ministerial Round Table: This Round Table will be held under the theme; “Promoting Investment, Trade, Entrepreneurship and related Development Policies to Foster Sustainable Economic Growth for Sustainable and Inclusive Development” and it is also scheduled for Sunday 22nd April 2012.
  • A high level Round Table entitled “Addressing persistent and emerging development challenges: an integrated approach to promoting structural transformation” is scheduled for Wednesday 25th April 2012.

The Minister is expected back home on the 28th April 2012.and challenges they face in exporting under AGOA.
