THE MINISTER OF TRADE AND INDUSTRY, HONOURABLE VINCENT T. SERETSE, LEAVES FOR HARARE, ZIMBABWE TO ATTEND THE SADC COUNCIL OF MINISTERS MEETING FROM
5TH TO 7TH MARCH 2015

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Honourable Vincent T. Seretse, leaves for Harare, Zimbabwe on the 4th March 2015 to attend the SADC Council of Ministers Meeting from the 5th to 7th March 2015. The purpose of the meeting is to prepare for the SADC Extra - Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government to be held in Harare on the 26th to 30th April 2015.

In a bid to advance the integration process, the 34th Ordinary meeting of the SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government, held in August 2014 in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, directed that industrialization should take centre stage in SADC’s regional integration agenda. The Ministerial Task Force on Regional Economic Integration was then mandated to develop a Regional Industrialisation Strategy and roadmap for industrialization in the region.

The SADC Council of Ministers will, amongst others, deliberate on the: Regional Integration Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) 2015-2020 and its recommendation towards the development of the Regional Industrialisation Strategy and its roadmap; the African Union and Continental Integration; the COMESA-EAC-SADC Tripartite Negotiations; the SADC-European Union Cooperation including the Programming of the 11th European Development Fund (EDF).

Botswana is a member of the (15) fifteen-member Southern African Development Community (SADC) and is party to the SADC Protocol on Trade. The Protocol, which provides the legal basis for SADC’s trade liberalisation and market integration programme, came into force in January 2000 and its implementation commenced in September 2006.

The Minister attends these meetings to ensure that the interests of Botswana are safeguarded when finalizing the RISDP and Industrialisation Strategy and its roadmap.  The Industrialisation Strategy and its roadmap will be crucial for the development of Botswana’s industries as it will go a long way in facilitating Botswana’s efforts to industrialise and diversify the economy.

The Honorable Minister will be accompanied by Senior Officials from the Ministry of Trade and Industry.
