Commemoration of Africa Industrialization Day
The Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Selebi Phikwe District and Town leadership will co-host the Commemoration of Africa Industrialization Day on the 20th November 2012 under the theme “Accelerating Industrialisation for Boosting Intra Africa Trade”. This day is recognized by all African Countries as a day to reflect on the industrialization path and discuss strategies that support industrialization. Commemoration of Africa Industrialization Day followed a decision by the Conference of African Ministers of Industries as far back as 1989 in recognition of the significant role industrial development plays in economic development. This theme emphasises the important relationship that exists between industries and trade in the industrialisation agenda and are key determinants in our diversification efforts. In this regard, the importance of producing quality goods and services for trade in the domestic and global markets cannot be over emphasised. Furthermore, there is need for a coordinated approach in providing a conducive environment that will enhance the productive capacities of industries that will enhance regional integration. In the case of Botswana, the major thrust of the Industrial Development Policy is to expand the country’s industrial base through development of diversified, sustainable and globally competitive industries. In this regard, Government continuously reviews and implements policies and regulations that support industrialization. Hosting of the event in Selebi Phikwe will help to show Government’s commitment in providing a conducive environment for industrial development in Selebi Phikwe over and above other initiatives such as Selebi Phikwe Economic Diversification Unit (SPEDU). This year’s commemoration is being held in Selebi Phikwe in order to profile the town and the region as an attractive investment destination as well as to boost Government’s diversification efforts beyond the lifetime of the mine.
