THE MINISTER OF MINERALS, ENERGY AND WATER RESOURCES LEAVES FOR INDIA

The Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources, Hon Onkokame Kitso Mokaila leaves for India on Saturday 09th November 2013 on an official business.

The Hon Minister is expected to meet with the Indian Ministers of State for Coal and that of Railways to discuss amongst others the collaboration on the coal beneficiation, infrastructure development and expertise on issues related to coal. India is one of the countries in the world whose demand for coal remains high and is mostly imported.

Botswana has massive coal reserves estimated at 212 billion tonnes. Lack of appropriate and dedicated infrastructure to move Botswana coal to the markets has made it difficult to develop the large coal resources which Botswana is endowed with. The trip to India is expected to assist the two countries in coming up with ways on how they can help each other benefit from the resource.

While in India the Hon Mokaila will meet different stakeholders in the diamond downstream industry and also visit the Indian Diamond Institute (IDI). Botswana is one of the countries chosen by IDI to host the India-Africa Diamond Institute.

The Minister will also undertake a site visit to Mundra Coal Port Terminal, one of the world’s biggest coal importing terminal.

Hon Mokaila who will be accompanied by senior ministry officials, is expected back home on the17th November 2013.
