THE MINISTER OF MINERALS, ENERGY AND WATER RESOURCES LEAVES ...
22/08/13

The Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources, Hon Onkokame Kitso Mokaila leaves for Australia from 25th to 31st August 2013 on an official business to attend the Africa Down Under Conference in Perth.

The Hon Minister is expected to give a presentation on Botswana’s Mining Sector at the Conference. The Africa Down Under Conference is one of the strategic international conferences which the Hon Minister is using to engage the international mining community and investors, in particular those from Australia.  Australia is strategic to Botswana as the majority of the companies investing in prospecting in the country are of Australian origin and therefore it is important to continually engage with those investors to build investor confidence and position Botswana as a destination for investment in the mining sector.

While in Australia, the Hon Minister will have a bilateral meeting with the New South Wales Minister for Resources and Energy, Hon Chris Hartcher. The meeting is to discuss among others:

·        Coal and the coal trading value chain,  mine to port coal supply network and related regulatory frameworks

·        Power generation from coal, New South Wales experiences and the technologies used

·        Sources of water for the people and agriculture given the inadequacies of rainfall in Botswana

·        Economic diversification away from dependence on minerals, e.g. the Hunter Valley experience in New South Wales

The Minister will also undertake a short visit to Eraring Power Station and Newstan Colliery both in New South Wales, on a benchmarking exercise which will further assist in the implementation of Botswana’s Coal road map.

Hon Mokaila who will be accompanied by senior ministry officials, is expected back home on the 31st August 2013.
