The Honourable Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources, Dr P.H.K. Kedikilwe leaves on an official visit for Marseille, France on the 11th March, 2012 to attend the Ministerial Conference of the Sixth World Water Forum.

The Water Forum offers the Honourable Minister an opportunity to engage with Governments, local authorities, enterprises and Non-Governmental Organisations on the challenges of water and sanitation in the world.

Amongst other things, the Conference is expected to discuss solutions to achieve the required availability, quality, acceptability, accessibility and affordability of safe drinking water and sanitation for all.

In view of Botswana’s challenges, the Honourable Minister is expected to articulate issues of quality and salinity of underground water which are often experienced, especially in the Western part of the country. He will also emphasise the need for technical expertise in desalination technology.

The Honourable Minister will on the 13th March 2012, proceed to Geneva, Switzerland to attend the annual BASEL World Watch & Jewellery Show at the invitation of Richold High Technology watch manufacturing operations. The Basel Show brings together some of its largest customers in the watch and luxury goods industry.

The Honourable Minister’s visit, which is a follow-up to his 2010 visit, whose aim was to attract investment in order to promote downstream diamond activities for beneficiation, value addition and economic diversification.

The Ministry of Education and Skills Development and the University of Botswana have initiated arrangements for two students who are currently undergoing training in Switzerland. In this regard, Honourable Minister Kedikilwe will revive negotiation to increase the number of trainees. Representatives of two Swiss Companies visited Botswana last November on a familiarisation tour.

The Minister will be accompanied by Senior Government Officials. He is expected back on 16th March 2012.
