MMEWR to celebrate World Water Day

The Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources through the Department of Water Affairs will join the rest of the world in commemorating the annual World Water day on the 22 March 2013 in Letlhakane. The commemoration will be held under the theme "Water Cooperation- creating partnerships". The Minister of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources Hon. Minister Onkokame Kitso Mokaila will officiate at this event.

The objective of this year's World Water Day will include raising awareness for increased cooperation by countries and the challenges facing water management in the context of growing demand for water access, allocation and services. Furthermore, there is need to build momentum and advocate for the sustainable management of water, with a special focus on water cooperation, its benefits and challenges.

The history of successful water cooperation between countries will be highlighted on the day and at the same time; emerging and burning issues pertaining to water sustainability will be identified.Water is a limited and vulnerable resource that sustains life and well being, hence the concepts of cooperation and partnerships are not new in the context of development, resource planning and the management of resources in Botswana.
The culture of Batswana has always been driven by cooperation and partnership. Building partnerships will advance future cooperation and help find commonly agreed and supported solutions to water challenges.
