Global Witness’s exit from The Kimberley Process
Botswana as one of the founding members of the KPCS and as a country whose economy is most dependent on diamonds, is saddened by the news that one of the founding NGOs of the KP, Global Witness, has decided to exit from the Kimberley Process.
“Botswana recalls quite vividly Global Witness’s well researched work on the dark side of diamonds which research led to the formation of the Kimberley Process. It is a pity that after so much work, Global Witness has decided to withdraw from the KP. While we may not agree with their decision we nonetheless respect it but hope that at some point they will reengage with the KP” Dr. P.H.K. Kedikilwe, Minister of Minerals Energy and Water Resources said.
In spite of the many challenges that the KP has faced and continues to face, the parties to the KP especially the NGO’s have never had as much opportunity to influence governments as they do in the KP. We hope that other NGO’s in the KP will continue to engage with the KPCS especially at this crucial point when there is an emerging meeting of minds on the need for reforms to the KP.
