Bi- National Commission between Republic of South Africa and Republic of Botswana launched

The Republic of Botswana and Republic of South Africa met recently for the inaugural meeting of the Bi- National Commissions (BNC) in Pretoria, South Africa.

The Agreement establishing the Bi-National Commission (BNC) was signed in August 2012 following the merging of the existing bilateral cooperation framework namely, Joint Permanent Commission for Cooperation (JPCC and Joint Permanent Commission on Defense and Security (JPCDS).  The BNC was informed by the historical and cultural desire to consolidate and develop the cooperation between the two States.

To date there are about Thirty-four (34) Agreements and Memorandums of Understanding(MoU) signed between the States with  a number of projects  already being implemented under different sectors ranging from  Agriculture, Defence, Energy, Water, Home Affairs, Minerals , Science and Technology, Environment, Justice, Trade and Industry amongst others.

The Meeting also noted with appreciation the progress attained in implementing the signed Agreements and MoUs and discussed areas that needed attention as well as new areas of cooperation.  This kind of cooperation is significant as it will provide strategic opportunities which will widen and deepening collaboration to advance development goals.

Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources in this meeting was represented by Honorable Minister O.K. Mokaila accompanied by Permanent Secretary Mr. Paya, Deputy Director International Waters- Ms Molefi, Deputy Director- Projects, Mr. Dedede, Chief Electrical Engineer Mr. Matshameko and Chief Executive Officer –Botswana Power Corporation Mr. Raleru.
