The role of the department is to gather, collate, assess and disseminate all information related to the rocks, minerals and groundwater resources of the country. The department also provides advice on an adhoc basis to the public and private sector on all issues relating to the earth sciences. It also administers those sections of the Mines and Minerals Act CAP66:01 that relate to mineral exploration.

Geological Survey: Background Information

The Geological Survey of Botswana was formally constituted in 1948 as the Geological Survey of the then Bechuanaland Protectorate (BP). It has grown dramatically ever since. Its principal role as the national repository of geological information, is proper management of the geoscientific information so as to assist in the economic development of Botswana as well as its natural environment, more especially, the scarce water resources.

· Mineral Dressing Laboratory

· Technical Records and Library

Divisions

The Department of Geological Survey of Botswana is made up of six operational Divisions which undertake the scientific work.

· Regional Geology

· Economic Geology

· Geophysics

· Hydrogeology

· National Geological Information Centre (NGIC)
