Upon realizing the physical bounds of tradi­tional paper and physical based systems, the Government of Botswana appreciated the need to introduce a reform aimed at taking the ser­vices to the people through the help of Information Communication Technology (ICT).

Therefore, the use of this reform enables free movement of information over the internet to en­hance the access to and delivery of government ser­vices to benefit citizens, business partners and em­ployees.

Roles of e-Government

  • Pushing information over the Internet, e.g.: regulatory services, general holidays, public hearing schedules, issue briefs, notifications, etc.
  • Two-way communication between the agency and the citizen, a business, or another government agency. In this model, users can engage in dialogue with agencies and post problems, comments, or requests to the agency.
  • Conducting transactions, e.g.: Lodging tax returns, applying for services and grants.
  • Governance, e.g.: Online polling, voting, and campaigning.
Benefits of e-Government 
  • Improved Service Delivery.
  • A catalyst for driving broad modernization of the public service.
  • Helps public servants trace and track use of services
  • Reduces cost in the long term due to use of less paper, less telephone costs to clients.
  • Transparency and accountability

As such, it can be said that The People’s Ministry provides about 176 services to Batswana on daily bases. In this context, the activities that the Ministry of Local Government offers on the government portal include; news items, tenders, vacancies, press releases and projects that both internal and external need to know about. 

We are currently living in the information age, and it is in this breathe that the e-gov reform is being used to provide an alternative medium (ICT) to disseminate information to the internal and external publics of The People’s Ministry.

Thus it can be said that through the use of ICT e.g. internet, computers, and mobile phones we have the ability to dramatically increase the access, availability and sharing of important and life-enriching information and services for all Batswana.
