2015/16 DROUGHT AND HOUSEHOLD FOOD SECURITY ASSESSMENT TOUR

Every year during the cropping season, Government undertakes a Drought and Household Food Security Assessment tour of the country.

The Assessment is conducted annually by a Task Team of officials from various Ministries made up of two groups. One group covers districts on the western part of the country whilst the other covers those on the east. In view of the severity of the current drought this year’s tour will be conducted earlier than usual from the 1st February to the 22nd February 2016.

The objectives of the tour are to assess;

a)    Rainfall distribution across the country;

b)   Crop situation;

c)    Grazing and rangeland situation;

d)   Nutritional status of vulnerable groups;

e)    Magnitude of destitution in terms of number and distribution; and

f)     Implementation of Ipelegeng Programme.

At the end of the assessment tour, the Team will determine whether the country is drought stricken or not and advise Government for appropriate interventions.

District Authorities, private and non-governmental organisations, farmers and the general public are requested to cooperate with the Task Teams conducting the exercise.

Thank you
