Minister Tshireletso hands over the baton

Children are a blessing to every family; they are a source of joy, laughter and liveliness to families. They are a greatest gift from God. UNICEF in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development, dedicated 50 minutes for the children at the Mpule Kwelagobe Centre, on the 20th September 2016 in Jwaneng.

In his welcome remarks, Kgosi Nabalo appreciated the presence of all and thanked the Assistant Minister Botlogile Tshireletso for gracing the event. He urged attendants to be responsible for the welfare of children at the Centre and encouraged everyone to care, love and show support to the children as future leaders, saying it is not only the coordinator’s duty to maintain the welfare of children but the whole community.

UNICEF rep Mrs. Motsuminyana highlighted that children should not be left behind because since their journey from 1966, they have tremendously improved and developed in issues concerning the welfare of children. She said a child of every Motswana should not miss this 50 years celebration, as in the next 50 years these children would do the same for their children. She encouraged that 50 minutes is worthy for everyone present to make a difference in a child that is not theirs.

Member of Parliament for Jwaneng/ Mabutsane, Mr. Shawn Ntlhaile said he is happy the Centre is treated like any other family and there is no contrast from a normal family set up. He urged everyone to visit the Centre on a daily basis, identify their needs and help them build their future. He said he wished for more centres like this across Botswana. He congratulated the coordinators of the Centre saying they are doing an inredible job.

Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Honorable Botlogile Tshireletso said that studies have shown that a home environment is the best place for raising children whereas there are situations where children need to be placed under Child care institutions. Tshireletso said government continues to join efforts with other partners and community to establish suitable home environments for raising children. She appreciated Jwaneng Town Leadership, Debswana Mine, Dimajwe Mining Company, as well as other local partners for the support.

Hon. Tshireletso said as Botswana celebrates its golden jubilee in 10 days’ time, children are not left behind. She expressed happiness as she announced that on the 21st June 2016 she launched the 50 minutes for children initiative, which is a partnership project between the Ministry and UNICEF. The Minister called on to everyone to engage in kind actions towards children.

In closing the Minister encouraged all to take part in the protection and welfare of children. She gave the baton to a councilor, Mrs. Letsie to select a place where she would do her 50 Minutes.
