Kgotla system key to governance

The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Frans van der Westhuizen says Bogosi and the Kgotla system remain highly relevant in the governance of modern Botswana.

Addressing the residents of Kolonkwaneng village at the official opening of their kgotla last week, the Assistant Minister noted that the Constitution of Botswana recognizes the role of Ntlo Ya Dikgosi as an advisory body.

“The Kgotla continues to provide a platform for consultations on various issues such as development, governance and any other issues of national importance. “

He underscored the pivotal role played by Bogosi in the development of our societies, adding that through the Kgotla, consultations on various development issues take place.

“The Kgotla also acts as a repository for culture, customs and tradition and it is where important values are passed on to the younger generation.”

He encouraged the Tribal Administration staff and the general public to take care of the facility, a Type 1 Office, constructed during the 2009/2010 financial year by Narco Group (Pty) Ltd at the tune of P3 211 949.99. The office comprises of Kgosi’s office, three staff offices, two store rooms, cell block, a car port and a screen wall.
