FCC goes digital

With most councils and government departments moving from pen and paper, Francistown City Council (FCC) has also vowed to take a step in the same direction by adopting the use of e-wallet services.

Speaking during a meeting with Ward Development Committee members at Civic Hall recently, a team led by the Chief of Social and Community Development at FCC, Mrs Sikhwebu E. Phama suggested the use of e-wallet instead of cheques in the payment of seating allowances as it is done in Molepolole.

When introducing the service, Mrs. Othusitse Phakalane said the objective of the meeting was to familiarise the members with how the E-wallet service works.

She said in the past they encountered problems with cheques taking too long to be produced, beneficiaries having to travel long distances to check if their payments were ready, which sometimes were not, and the members having to queue at banks to get their money. She said with E-wallet, everyone would access their money from the comfort of their homes with just a cell phone of any mobile network.

She said members would cease to travel to the council to check if their money was ready as a notification message would be sent to their phones. She encouraged members to submit numbers that are in use and safeguard their phones with their lives as only one number per member could be registered for the service.

Mrs. Goitsemodimo Ramacha noted that the service would allow them to buy airtime and electricity, adding that the money would last for three months in their accounts. “Members are more than free to transfer it to their existing accounts so it does not return to the council’s account if unused within the 3 months,” she added.

At the end, members embraced the e-wallet service and it has since been adopted.
