Community Development face of the Government

The Permanent Secretary to the President Mr Carter Morupisi says the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has a major role in enhancing communities’ lives with various programmes under the ministry.

Speaking on Wednesday where all the Ministry leadership, directors of departments, Council Secretaries convened for the ministry’s Senior Management Forum (SMF), Morupisi said the Department of Community Development and Social Protection are the face of both Government and the community.

He noted that social workers touch the lives of the people in various ways hence the directors of those departments should go around to see what is happening in different areas and engage with the social workers, adding that they should also make sure systems are in place and working smoothly.

He urged directors and staff to provide technical advice and support to the Permanent Secretary,Mr Molefi Keaja. He further added that poor work ethic is a number one problem in Botswana which should be uprooted.

Mr. Morupisi said that leadership workshops and forums such as SMF are important hence names of those employees with leadership skills should be taken note of to be groomed for leadership training.

He said there were cases where some senior officers are transferred to other stations and they request for brand new furniture while the furniture they found is still good to use. Morupisi asked that they refrain from such acts and rather opt to fix the current furniture to use it.

For her part the Director of DPSM Ms. Ruth M. Maphorisa said officers are hired to work 8 hours and extra time is delegated by supervisors as they are the ones who assign officers with work. She further said in some cases officers want to work overtime as a way of increasing their salary which is not a good conduct. She advised supervisors to not let their subordinate’s dictate how long their overtime should be.

Ms. Maphorisa said officers who are offered scholarships should share the information well in time with their supervisors. She noted that phase 1 one of outsourcing will take more time hence other posts or lower post such as of cleaners especially at village Kgotlas have been unfrozen. She revealed that performance in the workplace is measured through reporting hence all managers should send reports well on time and meet deadlines.

The DPSM Director urged leaders to have open door policies and to attend to all staff issues. She further said language in the workplace matters a lot hence all employees should talk in a professional to each other and to customers.

She revealed that in the remaining days before Independence, all employees can wear their Botswana tshirts and jeans to work as long as they look professional and smart. She told the attendees that the 29th of September this year is a holiday.
