Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF)

The 2015 Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF) is coming to Botswana. The Conference which will be held at Gaborone International Conference Centre (GICC), Gaborone, Botswana from 16-19 June 2015 is hosted by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and Botswana Association of Local Authorities (BALA).

This was revealed by the Commonwealth Local Government Forum Director of Communications, Ms Sue Rhodes during a short interview with Batho Pele Publications on Wednesday. She said the conference which is held every two years, will be the first of its kind to be held in Botswana and thus presents a unique opportunity for companies and partners who are working with Local Governments in the region or who wish to develop their markets in the future.

The Communications guru who is currently in Botswana to ensure everything is going accordingly said this year’s theme is "Local Government 2030; achieving the vision". It is said that the conference is one of the main international events for local government as it provides an opportunity for the host country to showcase the country and its work in local government around the theme of the conference. It provides an opportunity to discuss issues, developments and solutions in local government, helps shape CLGF’s local policies, research and support for projects in this area and feed them into the commonwealth policy and agenda setting.

She adds, "the conference also provides a networking opportunity to meet with Mayors and Local Government leaders, Ministers, Private Sector and NGO’s from Botswana and other countries thus providing an opportunity for creating new partnerships within the commonwealth." Expectedly, the four day conference will open up a huge window of opportunities for Botswana and Batswana as SMME’s and the tourism industry will benefit immensely from the event. A press conference is scheduled for next week to elucidate the ultimate essence of the conference in Botswana and internationally.

CLGF was founded in 1995 as a focus for action on local democracy within the Commonwealth. It brings together some 600 delegates who are key decision-makers and practitioners at both national and local level, from across the 53 Commonwealth countries and beyond. It is in this regard, the conference will also mark the CLGF’s 20th Anniversary.

This will be the 8th CLGF conference and the first time to be held in Botswana The conference, it is said comes at a critical time just before the announcement of the final UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and it will look at the challenges for local government in helping to deliver the targets and vision that they convey to meet the SDG 2030 target .
