Botswana Hosts CLGF 2015

The Botswana Government through Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development and Botswana Association of Local Authorities (BALA), has been granted the opportunity to host the 2015 Commonwealth Local Government Forum (CLGF). The 2015 Conference will be held at Gaborone International Conference Centre (GICC), Gaborone, Botswana from 16-19 June 2015

CLGF was founded in 1995 as a focus for action on local democracy in the Commonwealth. It works to promote and strengthen democratic local government across the Commonwealth, and to encourage the exchange of good practice to support the development of democratic values and good governance. It provides an opportunity to discuss issues, developments and solutions in Local government, helps shape CLGF’s local policies, research and support for projects in this area and feed them into the commonwealth policy and agenda setting.

The CLGF holds its main conference every two years and this is the eighth conference and a first to be held in Botswana.  About 600 delegates, who are key decision-makers and practitioners at both national and local level, from across the 54 Commonwealth countries and beyond is expected. The conference will also mark the CLGF’s 20th Anniversary.

These conferences are characterized by various themes from time to time and this year’s theme is “Local Government 2030: Achieving the vision”. The 2015 Conference theme has been chosen to seek to identify the key challenges facing mayors, ministers and officials in the next 15 years to;

  • ensure accountable transparent and participatory democratic practices,
  • promote economic growth and technological advance
  • develop inclusive and sustainable cities, capable of dealing with global trends such as rapid urbanization and climate change to name but a few.

 The CLGF was launched on the 26th November 2014 in Gaborone by the Hon Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, who said at the time, “the conference comes at a critical time just before the announcement of the final UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and it will open up a huge window of opportunities for Botswana and Batswana as SMME’s and the tourism industry will benefit immensely from the event.
