Anti-Corruption Hotline Launched

Since gaining Independence, Botswana’s rapid economic growth has been a shining example to other countries in the region and indeed abroad. This economic growth can be attributed to the discovery of diamonds and their apposite export, thus facilitating large amounts of income.

It may thus be said that, the phenomena of corruption as with other detrimental occurrences comes about not as an event, but rather a process of which is propelled by poor management systems and monitoring infrastructures. Thus corruption has the potential to be detrimental to everyone whose livelihood depends on the integrity of people who serve them. Corruption thus has the ability to hinder economic development, and exploit already marginalised groups.

It is in this context that Transparency International, premised on fighting corruption across the globe, conducts a Corruption Perception Index. According to the 2012 ratings, Botswana was ranked at number 30/176 countries globally. It has also dubbed Botswana the least corrupt country in Sub- Saharan Africa. It may thus be said that although these figures are impressive, cases of corruption still exist in Botswana.

To this end, The Peoples Ministry has established an Anti-Corruption Hotline which is premised on providing employees and the public with the means to anonymously report fraud, criminal activity and other irregularities in the workplace.

During his keynote address at the official launch of the Anti- Corruption Hotline Hon. Peter Siele availed that, "this Hotline will offer an innovative crime prevention and detection service which acknowledges the peculiarity and complex nature of the specific business environments."

Ms Botlhale Makgekgenene, Deputy Director, DCEC, added that "MLGRD has for the past four years been ranked the ministry most prone to incidents of corruption. Thus this facilitated the formation of ACU" Furthermore, she availed that the Hotline will bring anti-corruption services closer to people and as such reduce the incidence of corruption within MLGRD.

In conclusion let us all play our part to ensure that we root out corruption in our ministry. Kindly report all corrupt acts to the Anti- Corruption Hotline on 0800 600 968.
