INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2015: BEIJING +20-WHERE ARE WE?
The Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs, wishes to inform the Public about the upcoming International Women’s Day (IWD) which will be celebrated on the 5th March 2015 in Molepolole under the theme “Beijing +20 – Where are We?”
In September 1995 a groundbreaking World Conference on women was held in Beijing. A total of 189 countries, among them, Botswana, adopted the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, a visionary roadmap for women’s rights and empowerment. The Beijing Platform for Action focuses on different issues that were identified as key constraints to women’s human rights.
This year, Botswana commemorates the importance of this occasion through Beijing +20, a global campaign celebrating progress towards gender equality since the landmark Beijing Platform for Action was signed.
The theme for IWD 2015, sensitizes us to look back at how far we have come in achieving gender balance between men and women and highlights what still needs to be done to achieve gender equality.
The objective of this year’s IWD is to discuss women’s past strengths and successes as well as their weaknesses and failures, with a view to finding solutions to remove the constraints experienced and to commemorate the achievements, contributions, efforts and struggles of women made towards the entire development process.
