LAUNCH OF BETTER EDUCATION FOR ARICA’S RISE (BEAR) PROJECT

The Minister of Education and Skills Development Hon Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi will launch the Better Education for Africa’s Rise (BEAR) Project on September 22nd 2014, 0900hrs at Gaborone Technical College (GTC). The project is a development cooperation between the Government of Botswana and the Republic of Korea, where Korea shares its expertise in developing its education sector as a major driver of its economy.

The Korean Government has provided Technical Advisors from the Korean Research Institute for Vocational Education & Training (KRIVET) in the fields of Labour Market Analysis and Curriculum Development. Based on best practices, Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) means that the BEAR project has allowed Botswana the scope to transform its existing TVET provision to a standard which can be exported within the region and beyond. To this end, the collaboration between Botswana and the Republic of Korea has resulted in the development of three programmes with a suite of Generic Skills: • Diploma in Hospitality Management • Diploma in Travel Management and • Diploma in Culinary Arts

Each programme represents 2400 hours of practical skills based on theoretical training. The programmes validated by a panel of Industry experts are now being delivered at Gaborone Technical College with plans to extend the implementation to Francistown College of Technical and Vocational Education.

The BEAR project’s employability indicator includes a provision to measure the number of trainees in satisfactory employment within 6 (six) months of graduation. The BEAR project team worked closely with local industry and enterprises to ensure that the programmes developed produce graduates who have the right skills, attitude and mindset. Some of the companies which contributed their expertise include; Air Travel, Camp Site Management, Eco Tourism, Hygiene and Safety, Customer Care, Food Production, Food and Beverages Service and many more.
