Education Programs
Combating Corruption

Corruption concept has been infused in the school curriculum to be examinable in our formal education system. This is a breakthrough in the campaign against corruption for the youth of Botswana. The Raboammaaruri campaign for primary school pupils is directed at inculcating the spirit of moral uprightness in children at their tender age. The campaign is by way of a mascot that preaches honesty and accountability. Anti-Corruption Clubs for the youth run in both junior and senior secondary schools. Their main objectives are for the youth to disseminate anti-corruption information to their peers, to participate meaningfully in social and economic activities and to improve the youth understanding of ethics.

Orphans Care Program

The Orphan care program ensures that orphans remain in school; they are provided with appropriate nutritional supplements and are helped to overcome the feeling of loss and trauma following death of parents. The program includes food baskets, free schooling, support with educational necessities and psychosocial counseling for orphans. In recent times, there has been concern that this program may be supporting people who do not fall within the age bracket that defines an orphan, that is 18 years and below. A mass assessment was conducted during in 2006 which lead to a reduction in the number of registered orphans, mainly due to streamlining of the support structure to exclude people who were found not to qualify.

Animal Parks

The SSKB Animals’ Awareness Park was established in 1982. The primary purpose for establishing the park was to educate soldiers on the behaviour and general characteristics of various animals they were likely to encounter in their operational areas as well as to sensitise BDF personnel on the need and value of wild life conservation.

With the demand from the general public to visit the park, it was later on expanded and other animals such as monkeys, baboons, zebras and warthogs were introduced. The park today has become one the major tourist attractions around Gaborone with over 2000 visitors annually, especially Primary and Secondary schools, government and private institutions, dignitaries and the public in general.

Environmental Education

One of Botswana's Millennium Development Goals is to promote environmental education and awareness necessary to reduce contamination and achieve sustainable development. Environmental education has been integrated into the school curriculum. Public education seminars are held in districts/communities and every year, high profile commemorations are held on environmental issues. The print and broadcast media (radio in particular) also cover environmental education.
