Service Description

The Radiation Monitoring Service (RMS) is provided to monitor individual exposure and ambient radiation levels of the environment due to ionizing radiation from external radiation sources. The service is provided using Harshaw thermoluminescent dosimeter (TLD) badges for both personnel and environmental monitoring. The TLD badges used are capable of assessing with sufficient accuracy doses from exposure to beta rays, gamma rays, X-rays or a mixture of these types of radiation. The TLD badges are issued on monthly exchange periods at most two (2) weeks before the start of each wearing period. After the expiry of the wearing period*, the used TLD cards are returned to Department of Radiation Protection for processing and reporting of result follows.

How do i obtain Service?

  • The facility must be licensed to pocess /use radiation sources
  • Register with National Dosimetry Lab (NDL) by completing the registration form NDS 01 and sending it to DRP for processing.
  • After completion of the process TLD badges will be sent to the facility by registered mail.
  • After the expiry of  the wearing period*, the used TLD cards are returned to DRP for processing after which the results will be sent to the facility.
  • Staff changes that occur during the provision of the service are made by completing the amendments form NDS 02.

Costs involved in obtaining service

As a cost recovery measure, there are charges to the user facilities for the provision of the monitoring service and for lost or damaged badges. The charges are as follows:

  • Monitoring charge per worker per month:              P30
  • Replacement charge for a lost or damaged Badge  P550

Methods of payment: Cash/cheque or adjustment voucher paid to the Department of radiation protection.

Where ca i get more information

*the wearing period starts at the beginning and ends at the end of each month. To be considered for monitoring at the next wearing period, application should be recieved by DRP atleast twenty one (21) days before the beginning of the wearing period.

Service Description

Pursuant to the radiation protection Act, 2006 and Radiation Protection regulation 2008, no person shall engage in activities which involve ionizing radiation sources unless authorized/licensed to do so. This is needed to ensure safe use of atomic energy and nuclear technology.

How Do I Obtain Service?

To otain a license/authorization one has to complete application form (Form 02) and user registration form ( Form RAIS 01). All sections must be completed and all documetation must be submitted to avoid delays. If the the application is successful a license will be issued.

How Do I Apply For the Service?

when applying for the service please attatch the following documents

  • Radiation Safety and protection programme/plan
  • An evaluation of the nature, magnitude and the likelihood of the exposures attributed to the practice and sources within the practice.
  • A safety assessment in cases where tihs is prescribed by the inspectorate.
  • A determination of the characteristics and the activity of any radioactive material to be discharged to the environment with an assessment of the resulting doses to the critical group.
  • curriculum vitae and certificates of the nominated radiation safety Officer and his/her deputy
  • List of equipment/sources intended for use.

Costs Involved in Obtaining the Service?

  • Notification fee P50.00
  • Licence/Authorization fee as stipulated in ninth schedule of the radiation protection regulations, 2008. This will be determined by the risk associated with the radiation sources
  • Method of payment: Cash/Cheque paid or adjustment voucher to Department of Radiation Protection.

Service Description

Transport of Radioactive and nuclear materials must comply with Part XII-Transport Requirements; of Radiation protection regulations, 2008. Therefore permits must be obtained to transport the above mentioned materials. This service is needed to monitor movement of radioactive materials and to ensure that the materials are transported in a safe and secure manner.

How do I obtain Service?

The facility must be licensed to possess/use radiation sources.
To obtain transport permit one has to complete application form (Form 02).
All relevant sections must be completed and all documentation must be submitted to avoid delays.
A permit to transport radioactive source will be issued after successful completion of process.

How do I apply for the service?

When applying for the servic please attatch the following documents

  • A valid road worthiness certificate of the vehicle
  • A document describing safety measures put in place during transport of Radioactive sources

Costs involved in obtaining service?

The cost for a transport permit shall be as stipulated in ninth schedule of the Radiation Protection Regulations, 2008.
Method of payment: Cash/Cheque or adjustment voucher paid to Department of Radiation Protection.

Therefore, a permit must be obtained from the Department of Radiation Protection. This is needed to ensure safe use of atomic energy and nuclear technology and also to combat illicit trafficking of radiatio sources.

How to obtain the service

The facility must licensed to possess/use radiation sources. To obtain a permit, one has to complete appropriate sections of form 2.

All relevant sections must be completed and all documentation must be submitted to avoid delays. A permit to import or export will be issued after successful completion of the process. Remittance form must be filled and sent to the Department of Radiation Protection once the transaction has been concluded.

How do I apply for the service

i. For imports; a letter is required from the Regulatory Authority in the country where tha radiation soource is coming from giving authority to export the radiation source.

ii. For export, the applicant must ensure that the recipient has been authorised  to recieve the source.

iii. Letter from the company import/exporting the source also stating the details of the same source.

iv. A formal contractual agreement for the return of the spent sealed sorces to the manufacturer or supplier.

v. Certificate of the source(s) indicating wipe and leakage tests results, ISO/IEC compliance or compliance with any  internationally recognised standards.

vi. Details of the vehicle transporting the source, registration number, model and make of the vehicle, the route which the vehicle is going to take. Indicate safety measures in place in case of an emrgency during transportation of the source(s).

Costs involved in obtaining the service

Notification, import and export permit fees shall be as stipulated in the ninth schedule of the Radiation Protection Regulations and depending on the risk associated with the source(s).

Method of payment: Cash/cheque or adjustment voucher paid to the Department of radiation Protection.

Service Description

All government owned buildings, residential or office accommodation, goes through normal ware and tare. Whenever this happens DBES mobilize resources to attend to any faults or defects noted in any building. The department is also expected to repair these building before things start falling apart.

How do i obtain services?

Maintenance of buildings is simply obtained by contacting, predominantly by telephone, the area manager from a relevant DBES Depot (26 in total) to log faults or defects. The department will issue a job card and assign personnel and funds to repair the faults or defect.

How do i apply for the service?

There is no specific application form that a government department is required to complete in order to access maintenance services from the department.

Costs involved in obtaining service?

The department does not charge any fees to provide maintenance services to other government department. However, when minor works or rehabilitation works are required government ministries or department are notified of the cost so as to make funds available for the project.

The activity loop may or may not start with procuring various consultants, but will always involve procuring building contractors.

The instruction to proceed with the project shall also confirm availability of funding, land, scope of works for the project.

How do i apply for the service?

There is no specific application form that a government department complete in order to access project implementation services from the department.

Costs involved in obtaining service?

The department does not charge any fees to provide implementation services to other government department. However, when consultants are required to design and supervise construction works, consultancy fees are included in the project funds and borne by the government ministry or department.

The department does not charge any fees to provide implementation services to other government department. However, when consultants are required to design and supervise construction works, consultancy fees are included in the project funds and borne by the government ministry or department.

1. Service Desciption

This involves safety assessment of facilities to ensure compliance with the requirements of the Radiation Protection Act, and Regulations and other applicable international standards. This service is  needed to ensure  worker, public and environment protection from adverse effects of ionizing radiation; design and shielding of the premises; to collect inventory of ionizing radiation sources in Botswana.

2. How Do I Obtain The Service?

The facility must be licenced to possess/use radiation sources. Statutory inspections are planned by the Department of Radiation Protection. The inpections may be announced or unannouced.

Facilities may request for this service only where experts are not  available to perfom routine safety assessment for the facility. Therefore the service provided will be regarded as a consultancy.

3. How Do I Apply For The Service?

To apply for the service a letter must be written to the Director of Radiation Protection stating clearly why the inspection should be done out of our Department's schedule.

4. Costs involved In Obtaining The Service?

Pre-authorazation inpections and consultancy fees shall be as stipulated in the ninth schedule of the Radiation Protection Regulations, 2008.

Method of payment: Cash/cheque or adjustment voucher paid to Department of Radiation Protection.

Registration of Scientists and Technologist

Service Description
The Department of Research Science and Technology has a National Innovation Capabilities Database (NICDB) on research, science and technology. The purpose of the database is to record all researchers and innovators as well as their work output in order to enable estimation of Botswana’s capability in research and development. Facilities as well as work output are registered in order to enable estimation of Botswana’s capability in research and development. Information on human resources, expenditure, facilities and equipment will be retrieved easily for research activities. This information will also guide policy and decision making on research, science, technology and innovation.

Why Register?
Once you are registered you will be included in the national innovation database for up-to-date generation of indicators. Future funding for research and further professional development will be based on registration with the NICDB. Regular updates on science and technology on the ministry will be sent to you in future. Potential investors will be pre-informed about the S&T situation in Botswana before they invest in the country.

One can register by completing the Registration for Scientists and Technologist form and send to sbok@gov.bw.
