Pursuant to the Radiation Protection Act, 2006, no person shall import or export radiation sources unless authorised to do so. Therefore, a permit must be obtained from the Department of Radiation Protection. This is needed to ensure safe use of atomic energy and nuclear technology and also to combat illicit trafficking of radiatio sources.
How to obtain the service
The facility must licensed to possess/use radiation sources. To obtain a permit, one has to complete appropriate sections of form 2.
All relevant sections must be completed and all documentation must be submitted to avoid delays. A permit to import or export will be issued after successful completion of the process. Remittance form must be filled and sent to the Department of Radiation Protection once the transaction has been concluded.
How do I apply for the service

i. For imports; a letter is required from the Regulatory Authority in the country where tha radiation soource is coming from giving authority to export the radiation source.
ii. For export, the applicant must ensure that the recipient has been authorised to recieve the source.
iii. Letter from the company import/exporting the source also stating the details of the same source.
iv. A formal contractual agreement for the return of the spent sealed sorces to the manufacturer or supplier.
v. Certificate of the source(s) indicating wipe and leakage tests results, ISO/IEC compliance or compliance with any internationally recognised standards.
vi. Details of the vehicle transporting the source, registration number, model and make of the vehicle, the route which the vehicle is going to take. Indicate safety measures in place in case of an emrgency during transportation of the source(s).
Costs involved in obtaining the service
Notification, import and export permit fees shall be as stipulated in the ninth schedule of the Radiation Protection Regulations and depending on the risk associated with the source(s).
Method of payment: Cash/cheque or adjustment voucher paid to the Department of radiation Protection.
