MIST Construction Pitso 2013

“My Ministry is currently undertaking a consultancy project in collaboration with PEEPA which will inform a strategy and guide the process of participation by the private sector in facilities management of Government’s building stock”. These was said by the Minister of Infrastructure, Science and Technology Hon Johnie K. Swartz when officially opening the 2013 Construction Pitso co-hosted by his Ministry and other Ministries whose core responsibilities include among others, the delivery of Infrastructure. The 2013 Pitso was held on the 6th August at the Fairgrounds Conference Centre.

The purpose of the Pitso was to bring together a wide spectrum of stakeholders across the construction industry to deliberate on the challenges and reflect on the success of the industry. Held under the theme ‘Constructing the Economy: Consolidating Strategic Partnerships’, this Pitso was a follow up to the 2011 Pitso which expressed a wish for Government to work with the private sector in constructing our country. The 2011 Pitso passed about 13 resolutions split between the Government and the Private Sector with some being shared by the two parties, therefore the 2013 Pitso provided a forum to evaluate progress on the action items and retrospect on the way forward.

The honourable Minister noted with concern some challenges in implementing some resolutions like the unbundling of Government’s Mega-projects. Some challenges range from ‘the complexity of contractual arrangements to the complexity of management of multiple contractors on one site’.

Hon Swartz informed those gathered that his ‘Ministry will also be undertaking a condition survey of all Government facilities in this financial year’ with the idea of facilitating forward planning and prepare for the execution of rehabilitation works. The aim of this process is to develop a long term facilities management programme for Government Infrastructure.

The Pitso was well attended by the construction industry key players and received valuable presentations on modern trends in the field.
