NEDC TAKES SERVICE TO THE PEOPLE
13/07/12
The need for the provision of quality people centered service delivery, is at the forefront of The People’s Ministry’s’ mandate and as such, Local Authorities across the republic are hosting People’s Days as a means of sensitizing the public about the various services offered by the respective Councils in Botswana.

The need for the provision of quality people centered service delivery, is at the forefront of The People’s Ministry’s’ mandate and as such, Local Authorities across the republic are hosting People’s Days as a means of sensitizing the public about the various services offered by the respective Councils in Botswana. It is in this context that the North East District held its People’s Day on the 29 June in the village of Nlapkwane under the theme: Quality Service Provision: No Substitute.

The well attended People’s Day was characterized by various stalls which exhibited services and products which are available in the North West District, as means of bringing services closer to the citizenry. According to Mr. Clement Sibanda, “this people’s day serves as a feedback mechanism for the North East District Council (NEDC) as the engagement of the citizenry assists us in refining our services to the needs of our customers”.

Furthermore, Mr. Sibanda availed that, the decision to host the People’s Day in Nlapkwane came about as a result of the need to truly engage the residents of small villages in Council activities, instead of constantly hosting events in the Districts Administrative Headquarters in Masunga.

When delivering her keynote address at the NEDC’s People’s Day Ms. Taboka Nkhwa-Permanent Secretary Reforms, noted that “the concept of People’s Days is one which should be commended as it shows that Local Authorities are truly taking their services to the customers the serve.” To augment this, Ms Nkhwa availed that the Ministry of Local Government is premised on the provision of quality people centered services, and as such The People’s Ministry has received requests for more service centres to be established in the North East District.

It is in this context that she revealed that but due to the current economic situation the establishment of such centres has been postponed and these service centres will be established as and when resources are available. Ms. Evelyn Tsietso from Ramokgwebana Village who was in attendance at the NEDC People’s Day availed that the NEDC plays a crucial role in the development of their lives as residents of the North West District. She also noted that the exhibitions were very informative and she has learnt a lot about the services offered by the NEDC.

Mr. Kagisano Ramotshabi, a third year Auto-Mechanics student at the Zwenshambe Brigade, availed that their stall was characterized by them building a car engine and putting it on display for all to see. Furthermore, Mr. Ramotshabi applauded the NEDC for hosting such an event as it will go a long way in educating the public about Council services and other products available in their locality.

In closing it may be said that the concept of People’s Days is one which should be mirrored by all Local Authorities as a means of taking services closer to the citizenry, and as such improve the quality of lives of the customer Local Authorities serve. As such as service providers let us internalize this theme and stand together in “Providing quality service provision with NO substitute”
