In an effort to continue fulfilling its mandate of providing quality social safety nets to the less fortunate members of our society, The Ministry of Local Government through its North East District Local Authority has awarded 10 beneficiaries houses and backyard gardens. This came about as a result of the emerging need to provide housing to the needy as a result of the Presidential Housing Appeal and Nyeletso Lehuma Initiatives.

The 29th June saw various stakeholders’ i.e. District Commissioner North East, Dikgosi, Councilors, Social workers, and members of the business community descend upon the village of Nlapkwane, to award houses and backyard gardens to the less fortunate members of the village. According to the guest of honors the handing over ceremony, Ms. Taboka Nkhwa- Permanent Secretary Reforms, “the handing over of these houses and backyard gardens will go a long way in building dignity for the beneficiaries as they provide them a place to stay and a means of providing for themselves in the form of small scale vegetable farming”. Furthermore, Ms. Nkhwa availed that the multi-sectoral approach that was taken to build these houses and backyard gardens must be applauded as it shows that Government institutions and private organizations are now coming together to answer His Excellency the Presidents Housing Appeal.

An ecstatic Mr. Robin Philime, who was previously homeless, was awarded a house and a backyard by the Social and Community Development (S&CD) office at the North East District Council as a means of bettering his socio-economic disposition. At the handing over ceremony Mr. Philime availed that “receiving this house has now granted me dignity and as such I feel like a member of the community of Nlapkwane and not an outsider as before.”

Mr. Clement Sibanda-District Public Relations Officer at the North East District Council (NEDC) availed that “the handing over of these houses and backyard gardens is an initiative that encompassed various stakeholders such as Land Board, North East District Council, SHHA, and the Ministry of Agriculture. Mr. Sibanda also revealed that the provision of quality social safety nets cannot be done by government alone but it needs the input of all members of society for it to be effective and thus alleviate abject poverty from our communities.

In closing it must be said that, the efforts of the NEDC must be appaluded as the donation of these houses will go a long way in the inclusion of the less fortunate members Nlapkwane into mainstream society and as such facilitate social cohesion.
