ORPHAN CARE PROGRAMME

SERVICE DESRIPTION

It is meant for Botswana citizens only.  The Ministry of Local Government through the Social Welfare Division is responsible for the coordination and management of programmes geared towards orphans.  The programmes are administered through Towns and District Councils

HOW DO I OBTAIN THE SERVICE

Who qualifies

One must be:

  • A citizen of Botswana
  • Ages – 0 yrs – 18 yrs
  • Having lost both parents (married couples) biological or adoptive
  • Having lost one single parent
  • Abandoned or dumped children whose parents cannot be traced

HOW TO REGISTER FOR THE SERVICE 

Produce the following documents:

  • Death certificate (late parents)
  • Birth certificate (orphan)
  • Caregiver's ID
  • In case no death certificate available, a letter confirming death of parent from the Chief (local)
  • Registration done at S&CD offices.

 Who can appoint a proxy

A beneficiary (orphan) who is unable to collect his/her dues because of:

  • Disability (physical)
  • Age (too young)
  • Ill health may appoint any person who is a relative and willing to give assistance, to receive his/her dues – on their behalf.  Proxy must produce his/her Omang to get what is due to the beneficiary.

Assistance Provided:

Assistance has primarily focused on provision of food, clothing, uniform, toiletry, school fees, medical attention, transport to and from school and counseling.
