Adoption
DESCRIPTION OF THE SERVICE
Taking a child who is not your biological child to be yours legally.
WHO ARE THE CLIENTS
Both adoptive parent(s) and adoptee (child).
HOW DO I OBTAIN / APPLY FOR THE SERVICE?
Both adoptive parent(s) makes an application to the Local Magistrate Court where the child resides and a court order will be issued to the Social Worker to facilitate the process and prepare a social enquiry report.
ADOPTION PROCEDURES
(a) Application at the District Magistrate Court by the adoptive parent (s).
(b) Social Worker makes an assessment report concerning adoptive Parent (s) and adoptee, it entail economic status, home environment, social background and whether the adoption is based on the interest of the child.
(c) Where possible the biological parent is also engaged in the matter. The child has consent even when he/ she is over 10years.
(d) Pre-counseling by a Social Worker to those involved in the process outlining what will be required in the process as well as the consequences.
(e) Those involved should produce copies of OMANG, marriage certificates, bank statements; pay slips, birth certificates etc. after completion of the report.
(f) The adoptee and adoptive parent (s) together with Social Worker make an oath and sign affidavits at the District Commissioner’s office.
(g) The report and affidavits are presented at District Magistrate court where the Magistrate will preside over the matter and make a ruling whether to grant or not grant the adoption.
