Objectives of the Department of Public Health regarding Occupational Health
  • Initiate and support research that will provide guidance in assessing and managing environmental health hazards and risks, as well as operational research in collaboration with the department of Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation.
  • Develop and implement a Port Health Service.
  • Develop and implement a health care waste management service.
  • Implement an environmental health hazard management service including chemical and radiation control as well as tobacco control.
  • Monitor and evaluate Environmental Health programs and interventions as well as those related to Occupational Health, in collaboration with the department of Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to the Government and non-Government organizations/agencies and other Implementing Partners on matters affecting environmental health, and occupational health.
  • Initiate development of policies, standards of practice and guidelines related to Occupational Health and environmental health.
  • Provide occupational referral services including implementing a workers compensation intervention as well as operating an occupational health clinic.
  • Provide technical support on matters of occupational health including hygiene and ergonomics to stakeholders.
  • Establish and provide occupational epidemiological services.
  • Identify and assess the risks and health hazards in the workplace, including the design of the workplace, safety of machinery and equipment in the workplace.
  • Develop programmes for the improvement of safe work practicesand worker's risk free behaviour.
  • Determine workers fitness for work through pre-employment examinations, and surveillance of workers health in relation to work and assessment of incapacity in case of injury.
  • Develop and maintain strategies with regard to the management of water, chemicals, air pollution, radiation control, waste management, tobacco control and enforcement of food laws and regulations.
Pre-employment and Periodic Medical Examination

Pre-employment medical examination is a requirement which is done to determine workers’ health condition before starting work, while periodic medical examination is done to determine the impact that work might have had on workers’ health

Botswana National Policy on HIV/AIDS and Employment

The MLHA has developed a draft national policy that is formulated to provide a normative foundation to guide the conduct of all parties to the employment relationship and to promote mutual understanding of all, including government, employers and employees in managing HIV and AIDS issues through the establishment of workplace programmes.

Its application is intended to result in a safe, healthy and productive workforce, by fostering the establishment of an environment that promotes the elimination of discrimination, stigma, ignorance and prejudice in the workplace.

The national policy is part of the country’s response to the HIV and AIDS epidemic, providing guidance to efforts to prevent the spread and manage the impact of HIV and AIDS in organisations. This policy is based on the principles of shared responsibility and accountability. The policy encourages the social partners to engage in regular dialogue so as to better understand and resolve HIV and AIDS related issues in the workplace. The policy proceeds from the fundamental position that HIV testing remains a strong foundation for prevention, care, support     and treatment services. However, such testing must be done in accordance with national protocols and informed consent of the workers.
