Farming Programs for Prisoners
Dairy Farming

Cattle of Brown Swiss and Dairy Swiss Crosses are kept at Mahalapye and Molepolole.  They are kept for educational purposes however; culls are sold to the public by auction sale. Milk produced is sold to prisoners ration.

Poultry Farming

Poultry farming is done at Mahalapye, Francistown (Ntshe) and Boro Prisons. Birds that have reached the end of their laying period are sold to members of the public.

Poultry manure is used as fertilizers. Broilers are kept at Molepolole and Mahalapye Prisons. Birds are kept for instructional purposes.

Guinea-Fowls

Guinea-fowls are kept at Letlhakane Prison. Guinea fowl rearing is the latest range of farming activity aimed at encouraging inmates to diversify farming practice. Breeding is done by use of a 1000 eggs incubator and a hatcher. Birds are sold as dressed carcasses. Live birds are sold to guinea-fowl licence holders only.

Small Stock

Sheep and goats are kept solely for educational purposes. Culls are sold to the public by auction sale. Small stock is kept at Mahalapye, Francistown (Ntshe), and Molepoloe Prisons. Pigs are kept at Molepolole.

Dry Land Farming

Dry land farming is practiced at Mahalapye, Molepolole, Machaneng, Boro and Francistown (Ntshe) Prisons. Crops grown are cereals (sorghum and maize) and legumes which are issued to prisoners ration while surplus is sold to the public.

Horticulture

Vegetables are grown at all prisons. Vegetables are sold to prisoners ration while surplus is sold to the public.

Citrus Fruits Production

Various varieties of citrus trees are at Boys, Mahalapye, Serowe and Selibe Phikwe prisons at varying scales. The fruits are sold to members of the public.

Beekeeping

Beekeeping is practiced at Lobatse, Kanye Mahalapye and Prisons. Honey is sold to members of the public.
