Acting Minister of Presidential Affairs and Public Administration, Mr Shaw Kgathi has said government gives civil servants the attention they deserve. Addressing Immigration and Botswana Unified Revenue Services staff at Platjan border post recently, he said civil servants were the backbone of the economy and there was no way government can neglect its them. He said government would continue to be committed, support and improve their conditions and mentioned that there was a misconception by some that government has neglected its workers. He said government has through the amendment of General Order 39, allowed for the engagement of workers into private business but with prior approval by the relevant Permanent Secretary proved there was no perceived or real conflict of interest. As for the workers at remotest areas like Platjan, he said the Remote Area Settlement Allowance (RASA) has also been corrected to be based on notch system to allow for officers that have been staying at such areas to attract more allowance than newcomers. Other efforts to improve the civil servants conditions, the Minister mentioned the introduction of interest free salary advance for salary scale D4 and below, which in the past was a benefit for salary C4 and below.
