Lack of insurance stalls professional bout23 November, 2009 | |
JWANENG - Plans to bring professional boxer, Lesley Sekotswe home to defend his title next month have been dashed by the boxers lack of insurance as required by the Local Controlling Body (LCB).
Thuso Scud Khubamang of Scud Missiles Promotions said although he had met most requirements for staging the fight in Gaborone, his plans were hampered because most companies were not keen to insure the boxer. He added that without the insurance, boxers cannot fight in the country. Khubamang, who hosted his first professional fight as a promoter two years ago at Cresta Lodge, said procedurally, the promoter is supposed to insure the venue and not the boxers but that the LCB differs from others. He added that although the LCB was supposed to take seven per cent of the gate takings and a certain percentage from each boxers earnings, they cannot assist in insuring the boxers. He alleged the LCB does not have any relationship with local boxers that have turned professional, but that they claim to be concerned about their welfare. However, contrary to what Khubamang has said, the LCB secretary said they would have loved to have the fight in the country. Seitshiro Matlala said they have approached several insurance companies to help the promoter and that they are still waiting for their responses. He noted that South Africa is better placed to hold professional contests because they have a parliamentary act that protects the sportsmen. He added that they cannot take the risk because anything can happen in boxing. Matlala said although some professional bouts have been held in the country, none of the promoters has paid the seven per cent required by them, adding that had promoters paid their dues, the LCB would have accrued some cash to help promoters with the insurance required. He also noted that they do not have any sponsors or budget. BOPA |
