| Olomide in country with new hits 28 September, 2009 | |
GABORONE - Koffi Olomide is set to put the local rhumba music fanatics on fire when he performs in Botswana during the Independence weekend in the countrys two capital cities. Democratic Republic of Congos Kisangani born award winning rhumba sensation arrives in the country today. His first show is penciled for Independence day at the Adansonia Hotel in Francistown where he is expected to share the stage with local self acclaimed kwasa kwasa star, Jeff Matheatau, high riding kwaito-kwasa sensation, Odirile Vee Sento and the once mighty rapper, Biza Mupulu of Les Africa Sounds and Extra Melody fame. His next show will be in Gaborone at the DUMA FM grounds on Saturday. Organisers of the show promised a cream of the crop festival from the Congolese best selling musician who is now based in the French capital, Paris. Olomide, who is known by a plethora of names such as Mopao Mokonzi across the African continent and even beyond, is expected to descend into Botswana with his eighteen piece band christened Quatier Latin. Fifty-nine-year old Olomide, who has over eighteen albums under his belt, has dominated the music charts with charismatic baritone and sophisticated arrangements of his own invented dance style Tcha Tcho. Koffi has won four Kora Awards in South Africa and the best artist in Central Africa. Apart from his well decorated music career Mopao is a married father of five and holds a bachelors degree in Economics and a Masters in Mathematics from the University of Paris. He will be making his second coming to the country after an electrifying performance in 2005 at the now defunct Blue Tree club in Gaborone when he wooed multitudes of fans belting out tunes from his 2001 hot album Effrakatta. Olomides music delves deep into a variety of topics including love, politics, technology and religion. He was once arrested for hosting the son of the late Zairian dictator, Mabuto Sese Seko and disrespecting the late Laurent Kabila regime in his native DRC. Olomide was also highly regarded as a fashion icon as he has on numerous occasions won the best video awards for his extensive and flamboyant wardrobe and layout. He is well known for classic hits such as force de frappe, Loi, Wake up, Droit de Veto and his latest album Monde Arabe. All the Francistown and Gaborone shows are expected to start at 3pm and will feature some of the local acts in the mould of Scar, Kgotla, DT, Gong Master, Fresh Lesokwane and Jazz maestro, Socca Moruakgomo, all for P150.
