| SIM card registration to be complete by 2010 11 July, 2008 | |
GABORONE - The process of registering all prepaid Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards in the country will start in September, says the Chief Executive of Botswana Telecommunications Authority (BTA), Mr Thari Pheko. Speaking at a press conference in Gaborone this week, Mr Pheko said all public telecommunications operators, which are Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC), Mascom Wireless and Orange Botswana have been consulted on the registration issue. He added that the three companies have been given a two months grace period to put in place all the necessary mechanisms and processes to register their customers SIM cards. Mr Pheko said the registration process was expected to take 17 months and will be completed on the last day of 2009, adding that unregistered cards will be taken off-air in the beginning of 2010. He said people would be allowed to register any number of SIM cards they want, including those they were given for free. Mr Pheko said the registration exercise has been necessitated by the need to detect and prevent serious crime as well as to help to identify the ownership of a phone and SIM card when the need arises. He said the registration exercise was an international practice and would also give BTA the actual numbers of mobile phones in Botswana. BOPA |
