| Ostrich abattoir not doing well 15 April, 2008 | |
GABORONE - The sole ostrich abattoir in the country is still unable to reach its target of killing 1160 birds a month. Since its re-opening in October last year, the abattoir managed to slaughter a total of 1182 birds from October last year to February. The abattoir manager, Mr Freeman Mogaga said farmers are unable to meet the target because of limited infrastructure, unreliable feed supply and unavailability of chicks. The abattoir is a multi-species abattoir designed to handle ostrich, cattle and game. He said few ostrich farms, inadequate training and high start up cost were among the problems affecting ostrich production. However, he said the Ministry of Agriculture should provide more funding, subsidise ostrich farming start up cost and provide adequate infrastructure and training. He also called on farmers to invest more, devote more time and efforts in ostrich farming as well as liaise with the ministry officials on better and profitable farming techniques. The ostrich meat is sold locally and to countries such as as Belgium. The skins are sold to Asia and South Africa. The Dibete Ostrich Multiplication Unit that will address some of the problems affecting ostrich production is still under construction and after its completion the abattoir will provide farmers with day-old chicks.
