UK group conducts sports conference
23 August, 2007

GABORONE - A United Kingdom based christian charity organisation that uses sport to develop children physically, emotionally and spiritually has held its first national sports leadership conference in Gaborone.

The Kings Foundation was established in Botswana in 2002 and targets children at primary school level from under-priviledged communities.

The conference brought together various group leaders and potential leaders from different villages and towns in Botswana as well as representatives from Uganda, Kenya, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zambia, the United Kingdom and Canada.

Speaking at the conference, the Kings Foundation Botswana Director, Mr Matthew Loewen, said they target the children as a way of keeping them away from indulging in bad things and to keep them busy.

We want to teach the kids self esteem and to build their confidence as well as good discipline, he said. Mr Loewen said they work with existing non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and the Department of Social Services as they need indigenous guidance in addressing local problems.

He said they also teach the children about God and Jesus as a way of teaching them morals, but that they do not want cram religion down the throat of the children, adding that they focus on sport to mobilise the children.

In an interview after the conference, Mr Loewen said since arriving in Botswana two years ago, he has noticed that the spirit of volunteerism is lacking.

He acknowledged that there are no easy answers to the problems posed by HIV/AIDS and orphans. However, he said people need to change their lifestyle, especially in relation to raising children. BOPA
