Fuel prices shoot up after a cut in recent months
02 May, 2007

GABORONE - Retail pump prices for petrol, diesel and illuminating paraffin have increased due to high prices for crude oil in the international markets.

A statement from the Ministry of Minerals, Energy and Water Resources, indicates that the price hike which took place Tuesday would saw unleaded and leaded replacement petrol grades increase by 25 thebe per litre while diesel went up by 20 thebe per litre and illuminating paraffin by 27 thebe per litre.

The price adjustments include adjustments (increases) of the following elements: road delivery cost increased from 6.0 to 8.8 thebe per litre, oil industry margin (profit) increased from 28.3 to 30.0 thebe per litre and the dealer margin increased from 31.1 to 33.2 thebe per litre.

The release also notes that this increase follows the last price adjustment (decrease) effected on March 1, 2007.

It says prices for the period under review (February-March 2007) have been fluctuating between US$60.00 per barrel to US$69.00 per barrel.

This has resulted in a negative effect on the local petroleum products prices.

Government would continue to monitor the development of the petroleum products prices in both regional and international markets.

This will enable government to take more appropriate and informed decisions to ensure optimal price control to both the general public and the fuel supply industry, it reads.

Meanwhile the public is encouraged to keep on practicing fuel conservation measures such as switching off engines if waiting for more than three minutes, particularly for petrol powered engines.

Motorists are also encouraged to drive within the specified road speed limits since fuel consumption rates increases with increase in speed, avoid flooring of accelerators and unnecessary over revving of the engine on take off and ensure that the car is in the best serviceable drive conditions.

The release further encourages the public to use public transport, if available in the area, to avoid unnecessary over-spending on fuel and share cars if they work and live in the same area.

The public is also advised and encouraged to switch fro the lead replacement petrol (old grade) to unleaded petrol (newer grade) since it is more environmental friendlier and less hazardous to health .

Information pertaining to the difference between the two petrol grades is readily available from the department of energy at telephone number 3914221 or 3640200, Fax: 3914201. BOPA
