| Five countries to sign MOU 07 December, 2006 | |
FRANCISTOWN - Five southern African countries are expected to sign a memorandum of understanding for the establishment of Trans-Frontier Conservation Area (TFCA) at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe today. The Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Environment, Wildlife and Tourism, Mr Tiro Kganela, said the countries are Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Mr Kganela said the regional trans-frontier project will link more than 14 major protected conservation areas including Victoria Falls, Okavango Delta and Chobe National Park. The countries will explore the formulation of a regional conservation and tourism development strategy that would have profound benefits for the free and uninhibited movement of wildlife and tourists, he said. Mr Kganela said the memorandum of understanding will develop a common tourism thrust and also provide business opportunities for communities, lodges and safaris in the area. He stated that the proposed trans-frontier area has more than one third of the continental elephant population and most of them are in Botswana. Therefore, he said, the expanded conservation area that will be created by TFCA will assist in addressing the human elephant conflict in the region. However, Mr Kganela said participating countries recognise the challenges that lie ahead of the TFCA. The challenges include law enforcement, immigration, revenue and cost sharing and veterinary matters. Mr Kganela said the memorandum of understanding will provide a structure for negotiating and the ministerial committee will guide the proceeding on such matters. Botswana will host the secretariat for the proposed TFCA for two years. BOPA |
